Places where once the lights went out, all that remained were strange sounds coming from the other side of the fence that were far from home and only accessible by dimly lit, twolane roads.
It is fair to say, during the past three decades, Price has wound up in locations only hardcore football enthusiasts could enjoy.
That includes Clewiston, Pahokee, Lake Placid and Frostproof. Those are just some of the places where Price has officiated high school football games, something he has done for 27 of his 30year career.
Price will find himself in a far more hospitable place Saturday when he cheap north face jacket is inducted into the Southern States Football Leagues Hall of Fame in Orlando.
The SSFL Hall of Fame is located in the Citrus Bowl and features players, coaches, officials, staff and owners of the 10yearold league, which features semipro football teams from throughout Florida.
"There are a couple of characteristics David has that we look for in a referee," said Dave Rice, SSFL commissioner. "It's not just knowing the rules. "David is probably one of the top three referees we have as far as game control," Rice said.
Price is a member of the second class to be inducted into the hall, being recognized for his five years of service with the league.
"I think it's a great honor to be chosen, considering the amount of officials we have that go in each year, Price said. I really consider it an honor to be recognized. It was a real surprise when I got the letter in December telling me I had been selected.
Price, a former defensive back at Butler High in Louisville, Ky., moved to Fort Pierce in 1973 to play drums in a rock band called Rise. He began officiating in 1979, doing mostly Youth League games for the first three years before moving on to high schools his first game was at Moore Haven in 1982 semipro and even womens leagues.
